The mural at Houston St. and Bowery in the Lower East Side is a magnificent sight indeed. Painted in July ‘09 by Brazilian-born identical twin brothers, Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo, otherwise known as Os Gemeos - it was part of The Keith Haring Foundation on the wall he originally painted in 1982; and Deitch Projects, which is also soon to be leaving NYC.
I absolutely ADORE this mural. It’s so vibrant and brings so much life (and joy) to that intersection. Every time I pass it, I start giggling. It’s just full of interesting and fantastical creatures, yet with scenes from their real life - riding the N train and bicycling in the city. Of course, I LOVE the fish!
Get a close up of the mural from my “Sights in the City” album.
Be sure to view it in detail before it gets painted over March 31st.
(I wish they’d just leave it, it’s so lovely and bright.)
