What to do...March 18 - 20
What a gorgeous day today! I’m so happy for the sunshine and the shades, and the happy people everywhere (the warm weather really affects us all in a remarkable way). I went for a 20 min. fast-walk up and over the rocks in Central Park with my iced latte. So fun! Tonight will be just as fun with lots of things to do…

FRIDAY, MARCH 18: Seriously! Mark Kozelek AND Crystal Castles are playing in NYC on Friday night. The CC show at Terminal 5 is sold out, unfortunately. The last time I saw them at Don Hills, their show was incredible! I was sweating from all of the dancing and my brain felt like it exploded. I love how people describe them as “evovled sonic distortion and blissful melancholia; discombobulated and like lucid dreaming.” - Village Voice. It was one of my favorite shows of 2010! I’m bummed it’s sold out.

*On a side note…also sold out are all 3 NYC dates for the Sleigh Bells / CSS show in May. All 3 NYC shows! I tried to get tickets the day they went on sale…I was at the computer an hour after they went on sale and they sold out! Total bummer :[ If anyone knows of anyone with a ticket, I will pay you $50. For real. (That’s how good it will be.)

Anyways…Mark Kozelek (of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon) is also a favorite of mine, although he may seem to have an attitude to some people, his music is fascinating, beautifully crafted - poetry, and always resonated with me. When I first heard Red House Painters in 1994, I was astonished by the sound…it was everything I was looking for and I felt like finally there was someone who I could relate to or who I thought related to me. I also appreciated his approach to marketing, by looking away from the camera in all of his photos, and not giving in to what musicians were “supposed to do.” Let’s just face it…MK is a genius, even if you think he’s an asshole. Mr. Kozelek is playing at Bowery Ballroom with Jennifer O’Connor (from Tower of Song). Show starts at 9pm. $25. Buy Tickets HERE.

Taxi Driver is playing tonight at Film Forum and will run for two weeks - from March 18-31st. It’s the 35th Anniversary and it’s on 35mm film! This movie is just as compelling and magnificent today as it was in 1976! Watch the trailer. Read about it on wikipedia. Tickets are $12. Film Forum is located at 209 W Houston St.

The Gotham Girls Derbytaunt Ball is also tonight at Littlefield starting at 7pm with FREE Brooklyn Brewery beer from 7-8pm. It’s $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Get tickets HERE. Littlefield is located at 622 Degraw St. in Brooklyn.

And there is a Jeff Buckley Tribute going on at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn tonight - a Benefit for Road Recovery in association with the Estate of Jeff Buckley. Get more info HERE. Tickets are $10-12. Get tickets HERE. The Knitting Factory is located at 361 Metropolitan Ave. in Brooklyn.

SATURDAY, MARCH 19: The Goonies is the midnight feature this week at Sunshine Cinema for $10. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! Sunshine is located at 143 E Houston St. btw 1st & 2nd Ave.

SUNDAY, MARCH 20: Nothing says the start of Spring like daffodils and FREE shows all over Brooklyn. This Sunday, Brooklyn Bowl is hosting another LOCAL x LOCAL show with April Smith and The Great Picture Show. Show starts at 8pm and it’s FREE. Accordians, cellos and violins, oh my! I LOVE IT.

What to do...November 19 - 21
TONIGHT: Be sure the check out the First Annual Williamsburg Independent Film Festival at the brand new Williamsburg theater, Indie Screen, located at 285 Kent Ave in Brooklyn. The film festival is going on all weekend long. Click HERE for a list of films, start times and tickets.

SATURDAY, Nov 20: Start the morning out right…with shopping! From 10am-5pm Brooklyn Flea is open for business in Fort Greene for their last sale of the year (outside). That’s how you know that winter is getting close - when people don’t sell things outside anymore. Might I just say that I LOVE Brooklyn Flea’s website banner! Those drawings make me happy :]

Then begin the afternoon with THOR (Tomato’s House of Rock) “the school of rock kids,” at Brooklyn Bowl playing, as I was told, The White Stripes and many other cool songs you wish kids would play on electric guitars and drums. Check out their Facebook invite. This event is FREE and starts at 1pm. There is also free food, so you might want to get there at noon. Brooklyn Bowl is located at 61 Wythe Ave btw 11th & 12th Street in Williamsburg.

Later, walk over to WORD bookstore where Amy McCoy will be discussing her book, Poor Girl Gourmet, and giving tips on how to eat fancy food on a broke-ass budget. There will be free “treats” which I’m pretty sure means cupcakes and sweet things. This is also a fundraiser for the Greenpoint Food Pantry who, with generous cash donations, hand out over 350 bags of food per week to needy families. This event is from 7:30-8:30pm at 126 Franklin Street in Greenpoint.

SUNDAY, Nov 21: This is by far the coolest and most fun thing I have seen happen ALL YEAR! At 11am, the Big Apple Tweed Bicycle Ride will commence - everyone dresses up in their British Tweed’s and rides from Grand Army Plaza around about a weird way to Flatbush Farm for an English-style meal, tea-time treats, and a live performance by Scandinavian Half Breeds.
